Decorate with the environment in mind

Last year saw the continued growth of the houseplant (excuse the pun!), often part of the backdrop during Zoom calls. It’s true that indoor plants on windowsills and shelves really gave us the feelgood factor when we couldn’t leave the house. So, it is no surprise then that the natural world is set to further inspire our interior décor this year. We want to get closer to nature.

With the COP26 (UN Conference for Climate Change) arriving in Glasgow in the Autumn, governments are set to make decisions on our future use of the World’s resources. You can do your bit for the planet inside your home with your choice of materials for redecorating and refurbishing.

Rethink walls with natural textures and tones

Sprucing up a room in your house usually means a fresh lick of paint, wallpaper, and new tiles for the kitchen or bathroom. With the continued popularity of the feature wall, materials like wood panelling, decorative wall tiles and anything that produces a fun 3D effect is on the increase.

Of course tongue and groove on walls around the home has always been popular – some of us may remember the acres of varnished pine panelling in the 1980s? Now wood-chip and magnolia have been replaced by a multitude of modern textured wallpapers, some of which are paintable. In fact there’s even a paint colour called ‘Setting Plaster’ by paint specialists Farrow & Ball, if you want to enjoy the feel of a newly plastered room every day. There are natural cross-overs everywhere such as wall and floor tiles imprinted to look like wood.

Bamboo wall tiles join the design revival

This renaissance in tile design inspired us to use our own eco-friendly material. We have been importing bamboo boards and veneers directly from China for a number of years. The flat sheets are made from strips of Moso bamboo compressed together with resin. This was our starting point. After many months of testing, the result was a range of beautiful bamboo wall tiles for the home. We have called the range ‘Bammura’ to reflect their material and their usage (‘Mura’ meaning wall) – although the tiles can be used on other surfaces such as table tops and bar fronts.

These eco-friendly tiles are available as a square or brick tile in two colours, natural and caramel. The elegant bevelled edges on each of the tiles means you can quickly create a tiled effect across an area. The smooth, unvarnished surface allows you to refine the finished shade to fit with your overall colour scheme. The unique grain of the bamboo is revealed once wood oil or varnish is applied.

Bamboo wall coverings: an eco-alternative to rainforest hardwoods

Bamboo tiles add texture and warmth more commonly associated with precious hardwoods such as Teak and Oak. Whether it be from the Amazonian rainforest or Sherwood forest, you can preserve these places and ensure they carry on capturing carbon and cleansing the air, by switching to bamboo. In fact bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth and actually sequesters more carbon than many trees. Choose a new path for your interior design and revamp with a clear conscience!
