Bamboo Fencing and Screening: Which Option Is Right for Your Garden?

ß

If you are looking at bamboo fencing or bamboo screening for the first time, the range can seem broader than expected. Rolls, slats, panels, half round poles, whole poles: each one is built for a slightly different job. We have spent 20 years supplying these products to gardens, balconies, and landscaping projects across the UK, so here is a straight guide to what each option does best.

Bamboo Roll Screens: Fast, Flexible Garden Screening

Roll screens are the simplest way to add natural screening to almost any structure. They roll out flat, attach easily to an existing fence or frame, and work just as well indoors as outdoors.

Moso Bamboo Screen

The Moso Bamboo Screen is the original in our line-up, made from 25/35mm diameter light golden-yellow bamboo poles secured with sturdy 3mm galvanised wire designed to withstand the elements. It is natural garden screening done properly.

It comes in two sizes:

  • H: 1m x W: 2m
  • H: 2m x W: 2m

Customers use this screen for general garden privacy, but the half-height roll has some creative uses too. It is a popular choice for dressing balconies and cladding the front of tiki bars, and some customers have used it to fully clad a shed, giving it a distinct look.

Black Bamboo Screen

The Black Bamboo Screen uses the same 25/35mm diameter pole construction and 3mm galvanised wire fixing as the Moso version, but it is made from Black Bamboo rather than Moso. Black Bamboo is far less widely cultivated, which makes this a more exclusive material and one you will not see used often.

It is available in the same two sizes:

  • H: 1m x W: 2m
  • H: 2m x W: 2m

Like the Moso version, the half-height screen suits balcony cladding and tiki bar fronts, while both sizes work well for general privacy screening indoors or out.

Bamboo Slat Screen: Built for Large Areas

For bigger boundaries, the Bamboo Slat Screen is one of our best-selling products. It is made from 10/20mm diameter natural Moso bamboo slats in the classic golden-yellow colour, secured with a durable coated wire.

At H: 2m x W: 3m, a single roll covers a substantial area, and it is straightforward to install: simply secure it to posts or fix it over an existing fence to transform the boundary instantly. Customers regularly use it to cover large garden boundaries, and many add timber framing around it to build a complete fence with a more finished look.

Bamboo Fence Panels: A Premium, Framed Look

Where roll screens are flexible and fast to fit, our fence panels are built as standalone units, giving a more structured, high-end finish. All four panels in this group share the same build quality: 60/80mm bamboo poles, designed for landscapers creating contemporary or Oriental-themed gardens, and well suited to pairing with outdoor lighting for extra impact in the evening.

Java Black Half Pole Fence Panel - Main product image

Java Black Bamboo Fence Panel (Half Round)

Made from half round Java Black bamboo poles with black twine detailing, this panel brings a distinctly Japanese aesthetic to the half round format. The dark brown finish contrasts well against foliage, making greens and other garden colours stand out.

Java Black Bamboo Fence Panel (Whole Pole)

This is the top of our fence panel range: the same Java Black bamboo and luxurious dark brown finish, but crafted from whole 60/80mm diameter poles rather than half round. It is a premium, natural fencing solution for anyone wanting the most substantial option in the range.

Tali Bamboo Fence Panel (Half Round)

Built from half round Tali bamboo poles at the same 60/80mm specification, with black twine for that Oriental garden feel. Where Java Black panels create contrast against foliage, Tali panels do the opposite: they are excellent at brightening darker areas of the garden.

Tali Bamboo Fence Panel (Whole Pole)

The top-tier version of the Tali range, made from whole 60/80mm diameter Tali bamboo poles. Like its Java Black counterpart, this is a premium, natural fencing solution, chosen for its ability to lift and brighten shadier spots in the garden.

Woven Bamboo Fence Panel: Bamboo Meets Timber

The Woven Bamboo Fence Panel is the only product in our fencing range with a timber frame, combining the look and feel of bamboo with the stability of timber. Each approximately 20mm slat sits secured within a CLS treated timber frame, and the panel is quick and easy to install.

The bamboo used is Bissetii Bamboo (Phyllostachys bissettii), also known as Bisset’s Bamboo. Originally native to China, it is now grown worldwide, and ours is sourced from a sustainably managed plantation in Africa that UK Bamboo has visited in person.

Engineered Bamboo Fencing: A Contemporary, Dual-Purpose Board

Engineered Bamboo Fencing sits apart from the rest of our range. Rather than poles or slats, it is a tongue and groove board, built using compressed bamboo technology for added strength, and designed to work as either cladding or fencing.

Each board measures 1850mm x 135/140mm (actual board width versus width including the tongue) x 14mm, with a smooth face and a secure tongue and groove profile. Four boards cover approximately 1m², which makes it straightforward to calculate quantities for a garden screen, wall, or larger commercial installation.

The boards arrive in a natural teak colour and will silver naturally over time, in the same way that untreated timber does outdoors. If you would rather keep the original tone, or change it to match a design palette, you can apply a standard timber stain or decking oil.

This is engineered rather than natural pole bamboo, so it carries different credentials to the rest of the range:

  • 25-year limited manufacturer’s warranty
  • Weather-resistant and easy to maintain
  • Free UK delivery

Pair it with our Teak Bamboo Fence Posts for a complete fencing system, or use the boards alone for cladding walls and contemporary garden screens.

Which Bamboo Fencing or Screening Should You Choose?

A few questions to narrow it down:

  1. Do you need to cover an existing fence quickly? The Bamboo Slat Screen or either roll screen will do this with minimal fixing work.
  2. Are you screening a balcony or small structure? The 1m height roll screens (Moso or Black Bamboo) are sized for exactly this.
  3. Do you want a standalone, structured panel rather than a roll? Look at the Java Black, Tali, or Woven Bamboo fence panels.
  4. Do you want to brighten a dark corner, or create contrast against foliage? Tali panels brighten; Java Black panels contrast.
  5. Do you want the stability of a timber frame? The Woven Bamboo Fence Panel is the only option built this way.
  6. Do you want a smooth, contemporary board that doubles as cladding? Engineered Bamboo Fencing is built for exactly this, with a 25-year warranty to back it up.
