Autumn 2020: Sustainable updates to your interior

As we head into colder weather we begin to spend even more time indoors. There may be a space in your home you have been planning to freshen up.

Well it is easier than you might think. Here are some ideas to make your living space more cosy and homely.

Furniture Makeovers

Upcycling old furniture means that melamine, MDF and chipboard do not end up in landfill. Update a tired office cabinet using our bamboo panelling.

Here we used Raw Natural and Raw Green wall bamboo wallpaper to restyle a chest of drawers for an oriental feel. The ‘nodes’ or joints of the bamboo sit proud of the surface, creating an obvious bamboo look. The new handles were made from pieces of Moso bamboo pole.

Modernising with Bamboo

Use the flat slats found on our Autumn Wheat and Burnt Honey wallpaper to revive and modernise. We gave this old Ikea cabinet a new lease of life using the panelling inside and out; the table top finished off with bamboo veneer. We routed a tile effect into the veneer and finished off with Osmo Top Oil.

Lounging Around

Revamp a tired or second-hand coffee table to complete your lounge area. We made this contemporary table top from 7mm Natural bamboo board, but into square tiles with a bevelled edge. These are the perfect blank canvas for laser engraving.

Accessorise with Bamboo Off Cuts

Hanging shelves are simple way to display your trinkets and collectables; lockdown keepsakes can be cherished and revisited at a glance. We made this hanging display with bamboo boards, twine and off-cuts of bamboo pole.

Wall-panelling is a quick way to decorate a mirror or wide picture frame. We used Raw Green here. You can also use bamboo slats cut into mosaic style squares for a more sculptural effect. For some full-on wall art, take lots of small pieces of bamboo poles cut into short lengths and glue around a frame.
